Princess honors Tokyo club’s 50 years of work to improve women’s lives

Princess Hisako of Takamado attended a ceremony held Thursday in Tokyo to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Soroptimist International of Tokyo-Azuma, a volunteer organization dedicated to improving the lives of women.

Soroptimist International is a women’s volunteer organization founded in the United States in 1921. There are currently clubs in 118 countries and regions, with approximately 8,600 members in Japan. Tokyo-Azuma, one of the clubs in Japan, has been working since 1972 to help women who have been victims of domestic violence and to provide educational support for children in orphanages.

“These are meaningful activities that confront the problems of modern society and are a great help to those involved,” Princess Hisako said at the ceremony.
