An early-blooming cherry blossom tree is seen in full bloom near the Hiokidani community center in Tottori. The iconic giant tree, more than 90 years old, is currently blooming with faint pink flowers at the tips of widely separated branches. After being in half bloom about 10 days ago, it reached full bloom on Feb. 17. “We hope people will get an early sense of spring from viewing the cherry blossom tree that blooms in the cold,” said Tsuneo Taki, the 70-year-old chairperson of a group to protect winter-blooming cherry blossoms in the Hiokidani district.
