NEW YORK — Time magazine will feature former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who was shot dead while appearing at a campaign event for the upper house election in Nara City, on the cover of its next issue, the publisher announced.
Time posted an image of the cover — featuring a photo of Abe standing with his arms crossed — on Twitter with the message, “The legacy of Shinzo Abe, Japan’s longest-serving leader.”
The article on Time’s website noted that Abe, who had failed to achieve his long-standing goal of constitutional reform by the time he left office in 2020, “remained one of Japan’s most influential politicians even after his resignation, was still working to rewrite his legacy.”
“His efforts, however, were cut short on July 8 when he was assassinated,” the article adds.
It also includes comments from a pundit who said, “He was a political giant” and Abe succeeded in “reviving Japanese confidence and projecting a more confident, upbeat Japan.”
