The Japanese government is closely monitoring the political situation in Britain after Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced his resignation on Thursday.
Japan has concerns that the U.K. may become deeply mired in domestic political turmoil amid Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine. However, Tokyo is carefully assessing the situation. “A change in the leadership will not dramatically affect the Japan-U.K. relationship, which is equivalent to an alliance,” said a senior Foreign Ministry official in Tokyo.
