HIROSHIMA – Hiroshima Gov. Hidehiko Yuzaki has sent a request to U.S. President Donald Trump, urging him to visit Hiroshima this year to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing.
The letter, dated Monday, was sent to the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo.
In the letter, Yuzaki urged Trump to create a path toward the abolition of nuclear weapons, saying that Trump is the only person who can persuade other nuclear powers, such as Russia and China, to eliminate nuclear weapons from the world and thereby saving humanity from a potential nuclear catastrophe.
He added that he hoped Trump would talk with atomic bomb victims, visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and Peace Memorial Park and deeply empathize with the desire for peace in the A-bombed city of Hiroshima through the envisaged visit.
