The Emperor and the Empress visited Meiji Jingu shrine in Shibuya Ward, Tokyo, on Thursday, ahead of the 110th anniversary of Emperor Meiji’s death on July 30.
At about 9:40 a.m., the Emperor, clad in a morning coat and wearing a face mask, walked through the shrine’s Minami-Shinmon gate to the front of the honden main pavilion, where he offered tamagushi sacred tree branches and bowed. The Empress, dressed in white attire and wearing a mask, made a similar offering shortly afterward.
