Winter ‘hanami’ in Tokyo
13:15 JST, December 26, 2021
Cherry blossom trees are lit up in pink along the Meguro River, a popular spot to view sakura trees, in Shinagawa Ward, Tokyo. About 350,000 LEDs are being used to decorate a 2.2-kilometer stretch of the river on both sides, creating beautiful winter “cherry blossoms.” Used cooking oil from local households and restaurants has been refined into biodiesel to power the lights. The trees will be lit every day from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. through Feb. 6.
