Miko shrine maidens prepare ema votive tablets ahead of the New Year holiday period at Yushima Tenjin shrine in Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo. The wooden tablets, on which worshippers will write wishes, feature an image of a tiger, the Chinese zodiac sign for next year. About 50,000 will be made, according to the shrine, which said there has been an increase in the number of requests for ema tablets and other lucky charms to be mailed amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
