Gunma records ‘extremely hot’ day this year

TOKYO (Jiji Press) — The mercury hit 35.0 degrees Celsius in Takasaki, Gunma Prefecture, on Sunday, marking the first “extremely hot” day in Japan this year, according to the Meteorological Agency.

Takasaki logged the temperature at 12:54 p.m. Extremely hot days are defined as those when temperatures rise to 35.0 degrees or higher.

By 1 p.m., Tokyo’s central Chiyoda Ward and Osaka recorded 30.9 degrees, and Nagoya saw 32.1 degrees. The three places had a “midsummer” day, when the maximum temperature is 30 degrees or over.

In Fukuoka, the mercury climbed to 28.5 degrees.
