HANOI (Jiji Press) — Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Sunday told his Vietnamese counterpart, Pham Minh Chinh, that Japan will help Vietnam improve its military’s cyber capabilities.
The two leaders also agreed to continue cooperation to realize a free and open Indo-Pacific region, apparently with China’s growing hegemonic behavior in mind.
At the start of their meeting in the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi, Kishida said, “The world is at a crossroads in history concerning the foundations of international order.”
He asked Vietnam, which historically has close ties with Russia, to understand the need to strengthen pressure on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.
The two leaders confirmed that Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity must be protected.
Vietnam is among the countries that voted against a U.N. General Assembly resolution in April to suspend Russia from the U.N. Human Rights Council over the invasion.
Kishida and Chinh met as government leaders for the third time. Chinh visited Japan in November last year, becoming the first foreign leader received by Kishida since he took office in October that year.
