The 36th Tokyo International Film Festival opened Monday, with 219 films to be screened at venues in such central Tokyo areas as Hibiya and Ginza. Fifteen films, including three Japanese films, have been selected for the competition section, where they will compete for the Grand Prix.
About 200 celebrities, including actor Koji Yakusho who stars in opening day film “Perfect Days,” and Wim Wenders, director of the film and president of the international competition jury, took to the red carpet in front of Tokyo Midtown Hibiya in Chiyoda Ward on the day. They smiled at the cheering crowd waiting for them on the street. Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe, stars of festival closing film “Godzilla Minus One,” directed by Takashi Yamazaki, also made an appearance.
Other attendees included Goro Inagaki and Yui Aragaki who star in “(Ab) normal Desire,” a film in the competition section directed by Yoshiyuki Kishi.
The festival will run through Nov. 1.
