Brazil, Portugal join France in round of 16

DOHA — Five-time World Cup champion Brazil advanced to the knockout phase of the soccer tournament in Qatar along with Portugal on Monday.
They join Group D leader France, the first nation to advance and the defending champion, as the only teams with unblemished records through their first two matches.
Brazil got past Switzerland 1-0 to top Group G with six points through two wins, with the Swiss remaining on three points. Serbia and Cameroon fought to a 3-3 draw, handing both teams one point.
In Group H, Portugal beat Uruguay 2-0 in Lusail, earning the European power six points through two matches. Uruguay and South Korea both have one point after the Asian team lost to Ghana 3-2, giving the African nation three points.
Japan hopes to advance to the knockout phase in its last Group E match against Spain, with kickoff set for 4 a.m. Friday, Japan time.
