Firefighter reproduces rescue equipment as paper models

OMUTA, Fukuoka — Designs for paper models of firefighting vehicles and equipment have been made available to download from a fire department’s website in Kyushu.
The models were designed by Kimitaka Koga, 46, a firefighter at the Omuta Fire Department in Fukuoka Prefecture. He acquired computer-aided design skills when he studied architecture at a technical college and worked in the construction industry before joining the fire service. Koga has faithfully reproduced actual equipment using his experience in both architecture and firefighting.
About two years ago, he started creating paper models of rescue vehicles and helmets, as he had more time at home due to the coronavirus pandemic. His supervisor suggested using the crafts to promote their firefighting activities.
Four types have been introduced — a rescue vehicle, a hose, a gun-type hose nozzle and a firefighter’s cap. You can download the respective files from the Omuta Fire Department’s website(https://www.city.omuta.lg.jp/shoubou/). The official Instagram of the department (omuta.fd) has video guides for how to make some of the models.
More paper models, such as stretchers, oxygen cylinders and training dolls have also been completed and will be released over time.
“Firefighting equipment is rarely seen in daily life. I’d be happy if the paper models could spark people’s interest in our service,” Koga said.
