NARA — Cabinet member Satoshi Ninoyu, acting in his capacity as chairperson of the National Public Safety Commission, on Sunday visited the site in Nara City where former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was fatally shot earlier this month.
Ninoyu, the nation’s top administrative official overseeing law enforcement, received a briefing on the security situation at the time of the incident from Nara prefectural police.
“We’ll conduct an investigation so that such a case never happens again,” Ninoyu said. “We will also conduct a review for the purpose of boosting security and protection.”
Abe was shot at 11:31 a.m. on July 8 while giving a campaign speech for a House of Councillors election candidate near Yamato-Saidaiji Station in Nara, and died several hours later. Tetsuya Yamagami, a 41-year-old unemployed man living in Nara, was arrested on the spot and later sent to prosecutors on murder charges.
