Monitoring Strengthened at “Slam Dunk” Pilgrimage Railway Crossing in Kamakura with AI Cameras; Images Posted on Special Site with Blurring

Monitoring has been strengthened at a railway crossing near Kamakura High School Station on the Enoshima Electric Railway in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, a popular pilgrimage site for fans of the hit anime “Slam Dunk.”

The City of Kamakura has been conducting a pilot project since mid-December last year, installing AI cameras around the crossing.

A total of 12 cameras have been installed: four near the park in front of the crossing, four in residential areas prone to illegal parking, and one each at four other crossings in the vicinity.

In response to overtourism from domestic and international visitors, the city aims to monitor visitor numbers and photo-taking activities at the crossing while strengthening surveillance against roadside parking in residential areas and trespassing on private property.

Cameras near the park capture still images every three minutes. These images are blurred and published on a special website.

By making these images publicly available, the city aims to help visitors see congestion levels at a glance, encouraging them to spread out and improve their behavior.

In cases of serious misconduct, the city will provide information to the police. The filming will continue until late February, with data analysis scheduled for March.

Near the railroad crossing, a collision occurred last August between a junior high school student’s bicycle and a vehicle suspected of being an illegal taxi. In September, the city installed a designated photo spot in the park to discourage taking photos on sidewalks and roadways. In October, the number of traffic guides was increased to five, and another guide was added in December.
