Earthquake Prompts Tsunami Advisory in Izu Islands, Generates 30 cm Wave

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami advisory for the Izu Islands in Tokyo around 11:06 a.m. on Thursday, after an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.6 hit the area around 11 a.m.
The agency said a 30 centimeter tidal wave was observed in the Yaene district of Hachijo Island at 0:17 p.m. It lifted its advisory at 1:15 p.m.
The quake’s focus was estimated to be at a depth of about 10 km near Tori Island. No significant shaking was observed anywhere.
Oshima Town on Izu Oshima Island informed residents of the tsunami advisory and urged precautions via radio.
