6.4-Magnitude earthquake rocks southwestern Japan

TOKYO (Jiji Press) — An earthquake with estimated magnitude of 6.4 occurred at the depth of about 40 kilometers off the Pacific coast of the Kyushu region in southwestern Japan at around 1:08 a.m. Saturday (4:08 p.m. Friday GMT), according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
No tsunami is feared following the earthquake, agency officials said.
The quake measured upper 5, the fourth-highest level on the Japanese seismic intensity scale, in the Oita Prefecture cities of Oita, Saiki and Taketa and the Miyazaki Prefecture city of Nobeoka and town of Takachiho.
A few minutes after the quake, the Japanese government set up a liaison office on the quake under the risk management center of the prime minister’s office.
