Dolls depicting Sugawara no Michizane, a Heian period (794-late 12th century) scholar who is deified as the god of learning, are displayed at a private museum in Shiroishi, Miyagi Prefecture. The exhibition is being held in tandem with the ongoing entrance exam season, and runs through Jan. 31. It features 100 dolls of the scholar — a number chosen in the hope that test-takers will get a perfect score — created from the Edo period (1603-1867) to the Showa era (1926-1989).
