Japanese man dies in Ukraine after joining fight against Russia

A Japanese man in his 20s who had joined the fight against Russian forces in Ukraine has died, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said at a press conference Friday. It was the first time a Japanese citizen was confirmed to have died in Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion in February.

According to Matsuno, the man died on Wednesday, and the Japanese Embassy in Ukraine confirmed his death with Ukraine’s government on Thursday. The Japanese Foreign Ministry has been advising Japanese nationals to “Evacuate and avoid all travel” to Ukraine through a Level 4 travel warning, the highest level issued.
