Two male aoriika squid compete for the attention of a female in waters off Kawana in Ito, Shizuoka Prefecture. The cephalopods’ mating season is a popular spectacle among divers. In early April, the Kawana branch of the city’s fishermen’s association set up spawning beds at three locations at a depth of about 10 meters deep. “This year’s spawning season has just begun and will continue for about a month,” said Keiichi Kimishima, who heads a local diving service. “I hope people will come and enjoy the amazing sights of nature at work.”
