Rescuers have pulled a man in his 80s from the rubble of a collapsed house in Suzu, Ishikawa Prefecture, some 44 hours after Monday’s deadly earthquake.
They entered the house through the collapsed tile roof to rescue the man around 12:20 p.m. Wednesday, according to a video released by the National Police Agency. The rescuers are from a regional emergency rescue team dispatched from the Kanagawa prefectural police.
They called out to the man to “Hang in there,” before picking him up and carrying him out of the house. They laid him on a mattress in the street, telling him, “Good job” and asking if he was thirsty.
According to the police agency, some 800 police officers from across the nation had been dispatched to Ishikawa Prefecture as of Wednesday to continue rescue operations, mainly in the prefecture’s hard-hit cities of Wajima and Suzu.
