G7 Ministerial Meeting Declaration to Highlight Impact of AI on Education

The draft declaration for the Group of Seven Education Ministers’ Meeting to be held in Toyama and Kanazawa from Friday includes a statement about the impact of artificial intelligence on education, it has been learned.
The draft states that participating countries recognize the positive and negative impacts of the rapid development of digital technology on education, including the use of generative AI, which can produce text and images based on vast amounts of internet data.
Although there are expectations that generative AI models such as ChatGPT can improve student learning, concerns have been raised that the technology could be abused to generate essays and book reports.
G7 education ministers are expected to discuss the possible impact of generative AI on education at the meeting.
To promote education that integrates the real and digital worlds, the draft also includes efforts to improve the IT environment, enhance teaching skills and support human resource development in growth areas such as technology and the environment.
According to the draft, G7 countries will aim to restore and expand student exchanges to the levels seen before the COVID-19 pandemic.
The draft also calls for ensuring that children in crisis zones such as Ukraine have access to quality education.
Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Minister Keiko Nagaoka will attend the meeting.
The declaration is scheduled to be adopted on Sunday.
