Voting for upper house election starts

People started heading to polling stations on Sunday to vote for the 26th House of Councillors election across Japan. Votes will be counted immediately and the results are expected to be known before Monday morning.
The upper house of the Diet has a total number of 248 seats. In this election, candidates are competing for 125 seats, 124 seats of which the current holders’ term of office is set to end, plus one seat to fill a vacancy in the Kanagawa constituency. Of the 124 seats, 74 are to be chosen from constituencies and 50 from proportional representation.
