A red-crowned crane and her chick peck at food at the Kushiro City Red-crowned Crane Natural Park in Kushiro, Hokkaido. Two chicks born at the park on May 7 and May 18, respectively, are growing steadily, thanks to a diet of small fish and insects received from their parents. The young birds are expected to grow to full size after about three months. The rare species is a designated special national treasure.
