Mane attraction: Dosanko horses work up a sweat

Dosanko horses gallop along a path at Hokkaido University’s Shizunai Livestock Farm in Shin-Hidaka, Hokkaido. The horses’ physical characteristics were to be measured at the vast farm, located deep in the Hidaka Mountains. About 50 horses, including those born this spring, were encouraged to run to the measurement site. Dosanko horses are native to Hokkaido and considered a rare breed. About 30 years ago, there were about 3,000 such horses in Hokkaido, but this figure has since fallen to about 1,000.
