A stork feeds its hungry chicks atop an artificial nest tower at the Watarase Yusuichi wetland in Oyama, Tochigi Prefecture. Avian enthusiasts have been visiting the wetland to view the stork family since Bird Week began Tuesday. Watarase Yusuichi spans the prefectures of Tochigi, Gunma, Saitama and Ibaraki, and was designated a Ramsar Convention site in 2012. Oyama installed the tower in 2018 with the aim of boosting the number of storks in the wild. Storks have raised broods in the artificial nest for three consecutive years since 2020; the two new chicks are expected to leave the nest between late May and June.
