Summer-like Temperature Felt in Japan; 23.7 C Recorded in Tokyo, 25 C or Higher in Gunma, Chiba (UPDATE 1)
14:27 JST, February 20, 2024 (updated at 18:35 JST)
Warm air flowing from the south on Tuesday brought higher temperatures to Japan, mainly in regions on the Pacific side. By 2 p.m. on the day, record-high February temperatures were recorded at 78 locations nationwide.
The cities of Takasaki, Isesaki and Kiryu, all in Gunma Prefecture, and the town of Yokoshibahikari, Chiba Prefecture, recorded temperatures of 25 C or higher, marking what is considered the first “summer day” on Honshu this year.
In central Tokyo, people took off their suit jackets while walking around office districts, while people elsewhere wore short sleeves while taking photos of the sights. In Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo, 23.7 C — the highest temperature this year — was marked.
Rain and cloudy skies are expected to continue across the country from Wednesday, as the frontal system stays south of Honshu. Chilly days with high temperatures of 10 C or lower are expected in Tokyo.
