Powerful quake hits northeast Japan; tsunami advisory issued

A powerful magnitude-7.3 earthquake occurred off the coast of northeast Japan at around 11:36 p.m. on Wednesday, with an upper 6, on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7, measured in Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
A tsunami advisory was issued for the prefectures.
The quake caused a power outage for about 2.1 million households in the Kanto region, according to Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc.
Services had been suspended on the Tohoku, Joetsu and Hokuriku Shinkansen lines, as well as almost all local lines in the Tokyo metropolitan areas, according to East Japan Railway Co. (JR East).
