Toyota Motor Corp. will donate up to €2.5 million (about ¥320 million) to support Ukrainians following Russia’s invasion of their country, the company said.
According to an announcement made Wednesday, the money will be sent to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and other organizations.
The company also will establish a fund to support Ukrainians working for Toyota affiliates in the Czech Republic and Poland. The firm said donations will be collected from Toyota employees in Europe to help cover living expenses and migration costs for more than 1,700 Ukrainian employees and their families.
Currently, many of these employees are providing temporary housing for evacuees and volunteering as interpreters. The affiliates plan to pay each employee to do 40 hours of such work per year.
“Our colleagues in Ukraine and neighboring countries have been severely affected [by the invasion] and are in danger of losing their lives or being separated from their family as refugees,” company president Akio Toyoda said. “We want to help in any way we can.”
