Over 1,000 people infected with omicron variant in Japan

The cumulative number of people confirmed to be infected with the omicron variant of the novel coronavirus in Japan has exceeded 1,000, including those who tested positive at airport quarantine facilities, according to data compiled by The Yomiuri Shimbun on Tuesday.
The first case of the omicron variant in Japan was confirmed on Nov. 30 last year at an airport quarantine facility.
Okinawa Prefecture confirmed 225 new cases of infection with the novel coronavirus on Tuesday, exceeding 200 for the first time since Sept. 16, when it logged 229 new cases.
Tokyo confirmed 151 new cases on the day, up 105 from seven days before and exceeding 100 for the second consecutive day.
