WAJIMA, Ishikawa — Several emergency temporary housing structures have now been completed on the playground of the municipal Monzen Higashi Elementary School in Wajima, Ishikawa Prefecture. The structures, which were finished on Tuesday, were built in response to damage caused by the torrential rains that struck the northern part of the Noto Peninsula in September 2024.
This is the first temporary housing that has been completed for victims of the disaster. It consists of 30 units split between two two-story buildings and two one-story buildings. The first inhabitants will begin moving in on Friday.
Because Wajima was also hit hard by the Noto Peninsula Earthquake in January last year, only a small amount of land was available for emergency housing in the city. Construction began on the playground in October last year.
According to the municipal government, as of Tuesday, 11 households whose homes were designated as partially or completely destroyed were slated to move in. The Ishikawa prefectural government plans to construct 264 units for flood victims in Wajima and 22 in Suzu.
