SHENZHEN, China -A Japanese boy was stabbed on his way to school in southern China on Wednesday morning, according to Japanese government sources.

The boy was attacked by a man in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province. The area is a hub for tech firms and many Japanese companies operate there.

The child is currently undergoing treatment in a hospital. The man has been detained and is being interrogated by Chinese authorities.

Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Hiroshi Moriya said at a press conference Wednesday morning: “To protect Japanese citizens, we requested the Chinese authorities to take preventive measures and share detailed information.”

In June, a man with a knife attacked three people, including a Japanese woman and her child, in the eastern China city of Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. At the time, the Japanese government asked Chinese authorities to ensure the safety of Japanese nationals.
