14:22 JST, April 2, 2022
The so-called miracle pine, a memorial commemorating a tree that remained standing in the aftermath of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami, and a disaster memorial in Rikuzen-Takata, Iwate Prefecture, are lit up in the colors of the Ukrainian flag. The blue and yellow illumination will last through April 17, though not lit April 2 or 3, to show condolence for victims of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and as an antiwar message. Rikuzen-Takata, where 1,808 people were victims of the disaster that struck on March 11, 2011, wishes for each person’s safety
