Ukrainian flags planted in Kyiv’s Independence Square honor victims of the war, four months after the outbreak of Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine. The woman in the photo said she lost her son in the battle of Mariupol in southeastern Ukraine. Each flag bears the name of a Ukrainian victim of the conflict, which is believed to have claimed the lives of tens of thousands of civilians and military personnel from both sides.
