Yokozuna Terunofuji had trouble getting out of the gate, but he eventually slammed the door on opponents en route to winning the Emperor’s Cup at the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament on Sunday.
Terunofuji (12-3) took control from the start-off against Mitakeumi (6-9), securing a two-handed grip on the ozeki’s mawashi and practically carring him out of the ring on the final day at Tokyo’s Ryogoku Kokugikan to secure his seventh Emperor’s Cup.
The Mongolian yokozuna opened the basho with a loss to Daieisho, but bounced back to win seven consecutive bouts in the second week of action to capture the championship.
