Geiko traditional female entertainers and maiko apprentices attend a show to study the art of kabuki in an annual year-end event at the Minamiza Theatre in Kyoto on Friday. Geiko and maiko from the city’s five hanamachi entertainment districts usually participate in the event. On the first day, about 50 of them from the Miyagawacho district, who refrained from doing so last year due to the pandemic, watched a performance of “The Festive Kaomise Production: Grand Kabuki Starring Actors from the East and West.” The show, which runs through Dec. 23, will be attended by more geiko and maiko from the remaining four districts next week.
