Tragedy remembered

December 5, 2021
People pause to pay tribute to Tetsu Nakamura, the Japanese doctor who lost his life while doing humanitarian work in Afghanistan two years ago, at a memorial site in Omuta, Fukuoka Prefecture. As a representative for the NGO Peshawar-kai, he was working for the reconstruction of the country, but was fatally shot by an armed group in 2019 at the age of 73. A memorial service was held Saturday, the second anniversary of his death, and on Sunday in Omuta, where his home is located. About 200 bamboo lanterns were lit in remembrance of him.
