Temperatures soar in Japan’s Kanto region, elsewhere

Temperatures reached 35 C or higher by 2 p.m. Monday in 60 locations in and around the Kanto region, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
The mercury hit 39.8 C in Sano, Tochigi Prefecture; 38.7 C in Hatoyama, Saitama Prefecture; and 38.5 C in Otsuki, Yamanashi Prefecture, the JMA said. In Nerima Ward, Tokyo, the temperature rose to 36.4 C.
