People plant rice at the Oyama Senmaida terraced paddies in Kamogawa, Chiba Prefecture, on Saturday. To help preserve the 375 paddies, which are designated by the agriculture ministry as a rice terrace heritage, a system allowing people from outside the area to own the paddies was introduced in 2000 to make up for the shortage of rice farmers. The rice planting season started Friday and will continue through May 8. The crop can be harvested around the end of August.
