Workers begin removing derailed train cars on the Tohoku Shinkansen line in Shiroishi, Miyagi Prefecture, on Sunday.

East Japan Railway Co. (JR East) began the process Sunday of putting cars of a Tohoku Shinkansen bullet train that derailed during last week’s earthquake back on the tracks so they can be removed and the track cleared.
Each of the Yamabiko 223’s 16 derailed cars needs to be returned to the rails so they can towed to a depot by another train. Only one car did not derail.
Services on the Tohoku Shinkansen line have been suspended between Nasu-Shiobara Station in Tochigi and Morioka Station in Iwate since the quake.
