Kazushige Namiki waters rows of colorful habotan flowering kale in Adachi Ward, Tokyo. Namiki grows about 50,000 pots of mini-habotan measuring about 13 centimeters in diameter in a 2,000-square-meter field. The white, purple and pink habotan are shipped to florists and home centers through the end of the year. “The pandemic continues, but I hope people will have a bright New Year,” said Namiki, 70, who takes care of the field with three family members.
