Tokyo logs 14,445 new infections; more than 50% of hospital beds occupied

Tokyo confirmed 14,445 new cases of infection with the novel coronavirus Tuesday, up 1,632 from a week ago and a record for a Tuesday.
The occupancy rate for COVID-19 hospital beds was 50.7%, above the 50% threshold at which the metropolitan government begins to consider asking the central government to declare a state of emergency.
Osaka Prefecture said its Tuesday tally was 11,881, surpassing the previous record of 10,350 seen on Saturday.
Aichi Prefecture also reached a new record high of 5,751, while Fukuoka Prefecture said it expects to mark 4,515, its highest level so far for a Tuesday.
