Kipchoge 1st, Suzuki fourth in Tokyo Marathon

World record holder and two-time Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya won the men’s race in the Tokyo Marathon 2021 on Sunday with a new event record of 2 hours 2 minutes 40 seconds.
Kipchoge took gold at last summer’s Tokyo Olympics and in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. The top Japanese finisher on Sunday was Kengo Suzuki, the Japanese record holder, who finished fourth in 2:05:28.
In the women’s race, Brigid Kosgei of Kenya won for the first time, also with a new event record of 2:16:02. Kosgei holds the women’s world record and took a silver at the Tokyo Olympics.
Mao Ichiyama, who finished eighth at the Tokyo Olympics, was Japan’s top female runner in sixth place with 2:21:02, and Hitomi Niiya, who competed in the 10,000 meters at the Tokyo Olympics, was seventh in 2:21:17.
Marcel Hug of Switzerland, a two-time Paralympic champion, won the men’s wheelchair race, and Tsubasa Kina won the women’s wheelchair race.
The Yomiuri Shimbun is one of the co-organizers of the Tokyo Marathon 2021. The race started at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building on Sunday and finished in front of Tokyo Station.
