All three students of Okuma Junior High School, which had been in Okuma, Fukushima Prefecture, before the entire town evacuated in the wake of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and ensuing nuclear accident, graduated on Friday. The graduation ceremony took place in Aizu-Wakamatsu in the prefecture, where the people of Okuma took refuge after the disaster.
For the past eight years, a prefabricated temporary house in Aizu-Wakamatsu served as the school building for Okuma Junior High School, but it will now be torn down.
However, since three new students will enter the school in the new academic year starting in April, the school will not be closed but will move to a building occupied by an elementary school in Aizu-Wakamatsu.
