Ex-PM Abe ‘shot’, unconscious

Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was injured by an apparent gunshot while taking part in a campaign for the House of Councillors election in Nara City at about 11:30 a.m. on Friday, according to witnesses near Yamatosaidaiji Station. He suffered cardiopulmonary arrest and has been taken to hospital, according to firefighters. Several other people were also injured, according to witnesses.
Some witnesses say he was shot, and police are investigating the incident.
A Yomiuri Shimbun reporter at the scene said the former Liberal Democratic Party president, 67, collapsed after a “gunshot” during a street speech. A man was apprehended at the scene, according to a police officer.
