WAKAYAMA — A cherry tree with white and light pink blossoms is in bloom along a Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route in Nachi-Katsuura, Wakayama Prefecture.

The variety was discovered last April by tree specialist Hiroyuki Yagura, 44.

Located near Daimonzaka, the tree is about 8 meters tall and estimated to be over 20 years old.

When the blossoms first bloom, they are white. They gradually change to a light red hue.

Cherry tree blossoms with two colors are rare. The tree on the route is believed to have grown naturally from a cross between a yamazakura wild cherry tree and a kumanozakura cherry tree.
