LOS ANGELES – At times, baseball star Shohei Ohtani may seem larger than life. A giant mural on a Los Angeles hotel unveiled Wednesday only solidifies that image of the Dodgers’ two-way great.
The image of the 29-year-old Ohtani, which measures about 30 meters tall and 20 meters wide, adorns the Japanese-Owned Miyako Hotel in Los Angeles’ Little Tokyo.
The mural depicts Ohtani as both a pitcher and a batter. It was painted by Los Angeles-based artist Robert Vargas, who began working on it at the beginning of this month.
About 1,000 people, including Japanese Americans, Dodgers fans and team officials, attended the unveiling ceremony on Wednesday.
Ohtani joined the Dodgers this season as a free agent on a record $700 million, 10-year contract after seven seasons for Los Angeles’ other team, the Angels, with whom he was a two-time American League MVP.
