Yokozuna Terunofuji defeats komusubi Kiribayama on the first day of the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament in Fukuoka on Sunday.

Terunofuji got off to a good start on Sunday as the lone yokozuna at the first tournament since sumo legend Hakuho ended his career.
The Mongolian-born wrestler took a little time before forcing komusubi Kiribayama toward the edge and out of the ring at the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament in Fukuoka.
This is the first event in the city in two years, as last year’s November tournament was held in Tokyo amid the coronavirus pandemic. Terunofuji is aiming to win the Emperor’s Cup for the second time in a row.
Ozeki Takakeisho slapped down No. 1 maegashira Wakatakakage, but fellow ozeki Shodai was pushed down by No. 1 maegashira Daieisho.
