Cherry blossom trees of the Someiyoshino variety have started to bloom at Yamagata’s Kajo Park, the city announced Tuesday. This is eight days earlier than both average and last year, with full bloom expected on or after Monday.

The city’s parks and green spaces division, which manages the park, confirmed that at least five blossoms had opened on a tree in the park used as reference.

Visitors to the park could be seen looking for the blooms and taking photos. “I’m looking forward it. I’d like to come back when they’re in full bloom,” said a 68-year-old part-time worker from the city visiting with his family.

The cherry blossoms at Hiyoriyama Park in Sakata, Yamagata Prefecture, have also started blooming, it was announced Tuesday. According to the city, full bloom is expected to be reached in about six days.
