Reconstruction Work Starts on Morning Market in Quake-Hit Wajima

WAJIMA, Ishikawa — Reconstruction work on the morning market in Wajima, Ishikawa Prefecture, started Thursday in the area around Asaichi-dori (morning market street). Approximately 49,000 square meters in the area were burned down in a massive fire following the Noto Peninsula Earthquake in 2024.

Publicly funded dismantlement of quake-affected buildings was completed in April 2025, and the Wajima municipal government and others have since been making preparations for restoring the area.

According to the city, 16 people were killed and about 250 buildings were destroyed or damaged in the area due to the disaster. The city will construct public housing for those still affected by the end of fiscal 2027. A multipurpose square will be constructed in the area as well.
